PhD Student in Agricultural Economics

The main goal of the project "Reconciling innovative farming practices and networks to enable sustainable development of smart Swiss farming systems (InnoFarm)” under the lead of the Agricultural Economics and Policy Group at ETH Zurich is to investigate how information and communication technologies (ICT) can be aligned with new forms of social collaboration to allow for a sustainable development of small-scale, diverse Swiss agricultural farming systems. To achieve this goal, a consortium of crop and grassland scientists as well as agricultural economists from ETH Zurich collaborate in InnoFarm. We combine approaches from natural and agricultural sciences and social sciences (e.g. surveys, economic analysis and agent based modelling) in an inter- and transdisciplinary approach. To support this project at the Agricultural Economics and Policy Group we seek a
PhD Student in Agricultural Economics
The Tasks of the successful candidate, who has a background in agricultural economics and/or agricultural sciences, will be composed of analyzing secondary data (e.g. spatially explicit census data) and conducting surveys and interviews with farmers. He or she will strongly interact with crop and grassland scientists as well as various stakeholders, ranging from farmers to policy makers.
The successful candidate will have a M.Sc. degree in agricultural economics, agricultural sciences or a related discipline as well as strong analytical skills. Profound knowledge of statistics, agricultural system modelling and the Swiss agricultural system are a clear plus. Proficient oral and written English skills are expected. This project requires the candidate to be fluent in German, candidates without sufficient language skills will not be considered.
We are offering an interesting position in a transdisciplinary research project conducted in an interdisciplinary research group at a lively university environment in Zurich. The research will be carried out in a 4-year project, and will be accompanied by a PhD program comprising courses in economics and agricultural economics. The successful candidate will work in the Agricultural Economics and Policy Group and will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Robert Finger and Dr. Robert Huber. Salary and social benefits are provided according to ETH Zurich rules. Preferred starting date is January 2018.
