JOB DESCRIPTION
Background
The Human Computer Interaction group of Hasselt University is one of the leading Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) groups in Belgium. The HCI team of about 20 researchers is a multi-disciplinary team in the Expertise Centre for Digital Media (EDM, www.uhasselt.be/edm) with a focus on software and technology, and hosts people from a wide variety of nationalities and backgrounds. The HCI group performs research in various subdomains including user interface software and technology, multimodal interaction, physical and ubiquitous computing (including interaction with the Internet of Things), Human Robot Interaction, user centered software engineering, serious games, eHealth and technology-supported rehabilitation.
Hasselt University is a partner in the recently granted large-scale Horizon 2020 project “CoroPrevention: Personalized Prevention for Coronary Heart Disease”. The university participates in this 7-year project with its medical faculty, the faculty of rehabilitation sciences and the science faculty (computer science).

Job content
You will perform research in the HCI and eHealth domain that is aligned with the H2020 project CoroPrevention. From the HCI perspective, the research has a focus on personalization in mHealth solutions for cardiac patients, motivation, persuasion and shared decision making involving different stakeholders in the rehabilitation process. Independently as well as in team, you will identify research problems in these areas, design and develop creative solutions (e.g. advanced software prototypes of mHealth applications), evaluate these from a user experience perspective and contribute to the evaluation of their medical effect.
During the PhD, you will follow the doctoral program in the Doctoral School of Sciences and Technology.
You will also be involved in a limited number of teaching assignments in the UHasselt bachelor and master in computer science.
Profile
- You have a degree of Master of Science in Computer Science or in Computer Science Engineering (or equivalent), preferentially with a specialization or training in Human-Computer Interaction.
- You have outstanding academic performance (among top of class performers) and you have strong technical competencies.
- As the HCI research in EDM is strongly software oriented, you should preferably have solid knowledge of and a keen interest in software development. Experience in software development for mobile platforms is highly desirable.
- You have a keen interest in HCI-research and can work autonomously as well as in a multidisciplinary team.
- You should have strong communication skills, in particular oral and written English, to perform well in the context of the international research project.
- You are eager to interact with stakeholders such as patients and medical staff.
Offer
You will be appointed and paid as PhD student.
The successful candidate will receive a scholarship for a period of 2 years, which is extended with another period of 2 years after a positive midterm review (total duration is thus 4 years). The envisaged starting date of the scholarship is February 1 2020.
