KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. The School of Chemical Science and Engineering includes the areas Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Fibre and Polymer Technology. It encompasses both fundamental and applied Chemical sciences and seeks sustainable development through scientific excellence. Many research activities are interdisciplinary across the borders from Chemistry to Materials science, Environmental science, Biochemistry, Biology and Medicine. The School offers a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Chemistry, Degree Programs in Engineering Chemistry, Technical Preparatory Year and three international master programs: Chemical Engineering for Energy and the Environment, Macromolecular Materials and Molecular Science and Engineering. An efficient use of renewable resources is of central importance for the development of a sustainable society, and thus the study of renewable resources is of vital importance at Royal Institute of Technology. One of the most valuable fractions that is obtained in wood based bio-refineries is that tall oil, that consist of fatty acids and other hydrophobic and amphiphilic organic components, and is obtained as by product in kraft mills. However, its preparation is related to certain difficulties that have to do with limited solubility in alkali of the tall oil. We have a hypothesis, that the solubility problems can be solved by adding different types of additives to critical process stages, and this the purpose with this project is therefore to make solubility studies of well-defined mixtures of fatty acids and resin acids, in order to unveil if this strategy is fruitful.
We are looking for a civil engineer used with experimental chemical studies for a shorter project.
