The successful candidate will be based at the ‘Institute of Research on Multilingualism’ within the Department of Humanities. The candidate will work in the field of Educational Sciences and contribute to the research project ‘Collaboration with parents and Multiliteracy in early Childhood Education’ (COMPARE). The project is funded by the Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR), the Ministère de l’Education nationale, de l’Enfance et de la Jeunesse (MENJE), the Service National de la Jeunesse (SNJ) and the University of Luxembourg and led by Associate Prof. Dr. Claudine Kirsch. The candidate will be supervised by Claudine Kirsch and collaborate with the other members of the team.

The research project ‘Collaboration with parents and Multiliteracy in early Childhood Education’ (COMPARE)
International assessment studies show that children of ethnic minority background and low socioeconomic status are more likely to have poor literacy skills and weak academic achievements. Preliteracy skills are strong predictors of literacy development and should be developed early in homes and crèches. In Luxembourg, a multilingual education programme was implemented in crèches in 2017, requiring educators to develop children’s skills in Luxembourgish and French, and value home languages. The programme builds on partnership with parents. Currently, home-crèche collaboration and multiliteracy activities in crèches are underdeveloped.
This project in education, psychology and sociology, examines the multiliteracy practices in crèches as well as partnership building in Luxembourg. To help educators design multiliteracy activities and establish partnerships, we offer professional development to educators of 20 crèches and investigate practices in three crèches. The project aims to examine, firstly, the ways in which educators, parents and children engage in multiliteracy activities and adults establish home-crèche collaboration and, secondly, the influence of the multiliteracy practices and collaboration on the actors’ attitudes and literacy engagement.
The mixed-method study uses questionnaires to identify the current state of partnerships and literacy practices as well as the educators’ and parents’ (changing) experiences of and perspectives on these topics. We also conduct field work in three crèches, drawing on observation, video-recording, interviews and documentation. The findings should contribute to our understanding of partnership building, the engagement in multiliteracy activities, the influence of collaboration and multiliteracy on attitudes and engagement. In addition, they should contribute to the development of partnerships and multiliteracy in crèches and homes.
